Infertility is one of the most important reasons that lead to a visit to the doctor in the clinic, and it is one of the most important factors that can lead, sometimes, to a break in the marital relationship. Fortunately, science has developed a lot in this area, and it is now possible for spouses to conceive and bear children, due to the modern and safe technologies.

What is infertility?

It is the inability of the woman to conceive, twelve months of having sufficient marital relationship and sexual intercourse, for more than twelve months.

This infertility can be primary, meaning that the woman has not been able to become pregnant before, or secondary, if she became pregnant or gave birth before, then she was unable to conceive for more than a year.

What are the causes of infertility

There are many known causes, for men and women, but it should be noted that there is a rate of more than 15% for unexplained infertility

Causes of female infertility:

  1. Polycystic ovaries and irregular ovulation

  2. Dysfunction and darkening of the fallopian tubes, where fertilization is not possible due to the failure of the sperm to reach the egg through the ducts

  3. Old age and a lack of storage of eggs

  4. Some diseases that may limit pregnancy , if not under control, such as chronic kidney disease and others

What are the tests that a woman usually undergoes to diagnose infertility?

If there is infertility, and after a lengthy conversation with the spouses, we may order some tests:

  1. Hormones

  2. Ovulation check

  3. Sonar to make sure there is no fiber or something else (not all fibers have a role in sterility)

  4. Color photo For the uterus and ducts (hystersalpingography).

  5. In some cases, we may resort to hysteroscopy .

  6. In other cases, it is even possible to resort to laparoscopy

As for men, there are many reasons that can reduce fertility or cause infertility.

Decreased sperm count, increased viscosity, or other things

Examinations required from the husband?

  1. Semen examination

  2. Certain hormones

After that, we determine if there is a specific treatment that spouses can follow to increase fertility and pregnancy.

There are many diseases that we cannot cure, especially for men.

If a spontaneous pregnancy does not occur after the treatments that may help, you can discuss with your doctor:

  1. Stimulating the ovaries with pills or needles

  2. ICSI

  3. Assisted Reproductive Technology ART

ART

It is one of the most modern treatments, and perhaps the most famous of these is IVF. This method was successfully carried out and the first child was born in 1981 in England. She gave birth to a baby girl, Louise Brown, who in turn gave birth to her first child last year. There are more than four million people now alive, all of whom were born with IVF.

This method has many advantages, but it is not without some things:

  1. The high cost of treatment

  2. The success rate, although it has improved greatly in recent years, does not exceed half in each treatment course, taking into account all women of all ages.

  3. May lead to ovarian hyperstimulation (OHSS)

  4. It can lead to an increase in the proportion of twins and its problems.

We advise all women to take folic acid while trying to conceive, because it has benefits for the next fetus.
